TAMPA BAY NAMI AFFILIATES LAUNCH VIRTUAL SUPPORT GROUPS
Tampa, FL, March 30, 2020 – The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) affiliates in Hillsborough and Pasco Counties are responding to the coronavirus pandemic by launching joint virtual support groups.
“Covid-19 has impacted our residents economically, socially, and mentally,” said Natasha A. Pierre, NAMI Hillsborough’s Vice President. “There are people struggling that need support, and we are responding to the need.”
NAMI Connection is a FREE, peer-led support group for any adult who experiences symptoms of a mental health condition. A mental illness diagnosis is not required. Support groups were previously hosted in community hospitals, universities and churches.
“We are hearing accounts of insomnia, anxiety and depression from each county,” states Debbie L. Proulx, Executive Director of NAMI Pasco. “Our efforts now ensure that we can offer Tampa Bay residents access to support groups at various times throughout the week.”
Beginning on Wednesday, April 1, 2020, Tampa Bay NAMI Affiliates will offer daily Connection Recovery Support Groups via conference call and Zoom video in the morning and afternoon Wednesday through Saturday, and additional days and times will be added.
“The stress of pandemics, natural disasters and various adverse life events can significantly disrupt daily life,” states Proulx. “It is only by getting together that we will find our way through these challenging times.”
NAMI is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization that provides free mental health education, support groups, advocacy and public outreach. There are NAMI state, county and city affiliates around the United States.
